A Balancing Act

The buzzword in Room 309, after only 4 days – is “Balance Cushion”.

cushionAllow me to explain….

Last year, I spent considerable time finding research and strategies on student focus in the classroom.  You can view my collection of links here at my Diigo site:  http://groups.diigo.com/group/focus-on-ability.  While out shopping at Ocean State Job Lot one day, I came across these balance cushions, and thought they would be perfect for students to sit on during class.  Designed to help with balance, and core strength, they also can be used to help with focus and concentration.  The textured surface also helps students who need sensory, tactile input.   I was extremely excited, and decided to apply for a grant in order to fund a class set.

Sadly, my grant request was turned down, and I have been left with one lonely balance cushion which became an overnight sensation in our new classroom.  I believe that every student can benefit from sitting on the cushion, as it instantly helps with posture and abdominal strength.  The added focusing is a bonus!

I decided over the weekend to purchase 4 more cushions, so now I have 5 cushions to share between 19 kids.  I have spoken to a few parents, and some of them have decided to purchase cushions for their child.  Just so you know how the new “system” will work – if a student buys his or her own balance cushion, it will be theirs to use.  I will have them label it and they will be responsible for taking care of it.  They will not share their cushion, and they can bring it home at the end of the year.  The remaining Class Cushions will be shared among the remaining students on a rotating basis….
For those who are interested, the cushions can be found at Ocean State Job Lot at a cost of $9.00 plus tax.  If you prefer, you can send me $9.56 and I’ll pick it up at the store for your child.  You can even feel free to donate a Class Cushion!

I’ll keep you posted on our balancing act as the year goes on….  Thank you for your support.
