Meet the Teacher Night

Call it nervousness (that’s what I think it is), call it pent-up-excitement, but I really enjoyed Meet the Teacher Night.  It is REALLY hard to squeeze in EVERYTHING in a 30 minute span.  I think it’s most important for all of my 3rd grade families to get a feel for me as a human being, and for my classroom climate.  We have a lot of fun, and we work HARD!  I love that these students are still little, but I have HIGH expectations.  I always hope that MTTN opens up a dialogue where parents feel comfortable connecting with me about their children.  All the rest can be answered as the months go on, but you need to feel at-ease with me as a teacher this year.

First off, I promised the kids I would post information about our new Build A Bear, Journey.  Each year, I have purchased a new Furry Friend for our classroom.  Each friend has a special name, message and a book to go along with their message.  If you visit the Parade of Pals page on the right hand side, you’ll meet each of the animals, as introduced by the kids.

For 5 years, i have ALWAYS chosen a specific animal, and then decided on the perfect name, and then found a book to match. This year was different.  I started with what I think is the perfect book: The North Star, by Peter Reynolds. You can read the book online here: CLICK ON THE PIC!

In his book, Peter encourages us (as Navigators) to think about where we are, where we want to go, and how we want to get there. It celebrates the fact that each of us are on our own individual, personal journey.  We all have our own path to follow, and our own guiding constellations.  The concept is pretty big for kids to wrap their little heads around, but I think Peter does a great job of bring it to their level of understanding….

So, Journey the Bunny is here in our classroom to remind us to slow down, and think about where we are, where we want to go, and how to get there.  The kids love her, as do I.

For some reason, the kids were all talking about how their parents were crying at Meet the Teacher Night.  Crying?  Was I THAT scary??  I tried to think of what it was, that made you cry – and my only guess was that it could have been the slide show I forced you all to watch…  HEE!!!  Take a look, and let me know! Hi Ruby!

Nice to see you posting — I miss you, too! I’m sure you’re doing great in 4th grade :O).

The new bunny is named Journey – and it’s based on the story The North Star by Peter Reynolds – do you remember we read that book online last year? You can read it again – I put the link on the blog.

    Have a great weekend!!

    Love,
    Mrs. Brooks
