This is the Open Response question we asked students last week:
What does this picture mean to you?

Students had to start by Rephrasing the question (we were reviewing the skill of Rephrasing).  They crossed out the asking words and used the remaining words to compose a closed response.

Here are their full responses:

This picture means many things to me.  Sometimes when two people look at something, it does not have to be the same thing.  People can decide what they want to think.  ~Aundria

This picture means many things to me.  If one person thinks that something is a duck, another person thinks it is a rabbit.  Maybe they could be looking at it from a different direction: I’m standing right here and you can stand 30 yards away from me.  From where you’re standing we see the same thing, but we might think it is something else.  What I think it is might be different because you’re not standing right next to me.  So you can think it is a duck.   ~ Jacob

This picture reminds me of many things.  Two people are fighting about the Duck Rabbit. Both of them thought they were right.  In the end, both of them thought the other was right.   ~Markus

They were arguing about Duck and Rabbit.  And maybe they both were right.   ~Jonathan

This picture means many things to me.  In this book it taught us a lesson about when you look at something.  It is not always what you think it is.  This is what the story told us about.  I think this story told us another lesson.  Some people look at something and see something that someone else doesn’t see.   ~Jackson

This picture means many things to me.  When you see a rabbit it kinds of looks like a duck because of the ears.  The author wants tto do this so some people think that it’s a rabbit or a duck.  It is possible that two people can look at the same thing and have different opinions.   ~Lawrence

This picture means many things to me.  This picture makes me think about how people can have totally different ideas about one thing and still see the same thing.  That’s what this picture means to me.   ~Angelina D.

This picture means many things to me.  It means when two people see something and see it differently it could be either one.  So, in Duck Rabbit, it could have been a duck or a rabbit.  So, next time you’re with a friend and you guys see something differently, just believe each other.   ~Angelina N.

This picture means many things to me.  Because it is a circle story it tells you about a duck and a rabbit and on the book it shows like half duck, haf rabbit and in the story it tells you about two people saying one is a duck and one is arabbit.  But I think the book was funny.  It tells about two people who can’t agree about a picture.  One sees a rabbit, the other sees a duck.  They both might be right.      ~Christopher

This picture means many things to me.  It means that when two friends see something in a different way, it could be either one.  So, now when you and your friend see something in a different way, listen to each other.     ~Victoria

This picture means many things to me.  I think that it is a rabbit.  Some pople might see a duck.  Two people can look at one thing and see it differently.    ~Peter

This picture means many things to me.  If you want to imagine it as a duck, it seems that you can only see a duck.  But if you want to see a rabbit, it seems like you can only see a rabbit  Like one time, Anna and I were looking at the clouds and I saw one that looked like a heart with a stem.  Anna thought it looked like one of those symbols on a card.  But it was fun.  That is what it means to me.     ~Carly

This picture means many things to me.  ithink it is a duck. The big thing is that a person thinks it is a duck and another person thinks it is a rabbit.  They see it in a different position because they see it in a different angle.  They both might be right!   ~Nicholas

This picture means many things to me.  Well, when one person looks one way and the other person looks the other, they have different opinions.  They might start having an argument.  One of them may think of the other idea and come to an agreement.   ~Lauren

I think it is a rabbit.  One time I saw a rabbit move his ears back.  I think he was hopping and I thought he was hiding.   ~Ben

This picture means many things to me.  It tells us that everyone sees different things.  Maybe they see different things because they look at a different side. Maybe if they both looked at the same side they would see the same thing.   ~Sean

This picture means many things to me.  I think that it looks like a duck.  Other people might think it is a rabbit.  I might think it is a rabbit soon  It is very important to consider what someone else sees.   ~John

This picture means many things to me. It shows that two people can see things differently.  I have been in an argument like that.  Once, I was playing indoor soccer.  I thought that I had scored a goal, but my friend Quianlong said I didn’t.  It did not end like the book.   ~Nathaniel

This picture means many things to me.  I think that the duck rabbit looks more like a rabbit than a duck.  I think that because usually a duck does not have that long of a bill.  Also there is a point for the rabbit’s nose.  But, it teaches you that if you look at something in one way and then look at it another way, you could see totally different things.  That is what that picture means to me.  ~Isabelle
