Arts Alive!

Today in Arts Alive, students learned about Vincent Van Gogh.

Vincent Van Gogh was born in 1853 in the Netherlands. He had 2 brothers and 3 sisters.

In his lifetime, he produced more than 2,000 pieces of art, including around 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings and sketches.

Van Gogh did not begin to study art until he was 27 years old. Before this, he had tried working as a bookstore clerk, an art salesman, and a pastor (like his father), but did not succeed at any of these. At 27, he moved home and taught himself to draw. He eventually moved to France and met many other artists, such as Gauguin and Monet.

We know that Van Gogh is quite famous today. In fact, some of his paintings in recent times have sold for prices ranging from 40-82 million dollars!! He has inspired many other artists. However, in Van Gogh’s lifetime, his art was not popular or famous. He sold only one painting while he was alive.

In class with Mrs. Brooks, students are learning about the universe and its many parts. In Arts Alive today, students used one of Van Gogh’s most famous pieces of art, Starry Night as an inspiration to create their own artwork illustrating something that they have learned about in class!

Sincerely,

Kerri Evans and Elizabeth Rogers-Hebner
