Money, Money

Am I the only one with money on my mind this lately? We continue to work with money in math…  Getting comfortable with counting money makes it easier to learn decimals now and fractions later on…  Here at home, I have an activity I have done with both my kids.

From time to time, I will empty out my purse of all my pocket change.  I let Carson take as long as he wants to count it all. If he gets the total correct on his first answer, he gets to keep all the money.  If he gets it wrong, he has to split the money between himself and his sister.  That means having to count it again, and then split it in half, and counting to double check. The reward has made it worth it to him to learn how to count change.

With Kendyl we later on put a twist on things.  She has to count back change for me.  I tell her I’ll give her $1.00 if she can use mental math to tell me how much change I would get if I used $1.00 to buy an item that costs $.38.  If she can tell me the correct answer on the first shot, she keeps the full $1.00.  If she is wrong, she has to split it with Carson.

All this work has helped them become quite good at counting money! I’m finding I need to challenge them both way more, as they are in 6th and 8th grade, but that’s a good thing!

🙂 It’s a half-day tomorrow for parent/teacher conferences. I sent home confirmations to each of you and look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!  Arrive a bit early and have some time to review your child’s work in the hall before we meet!

🙂 Book Jacket projects are due 12/23.  Please help your child create a timeline now, so the due date does not sneak up on anyone.  There is nothing worse than waiting until the last minute (I’ve been there!!).  If you need help in any way, drop me a line!

🙂 Camp Read A Lot is also 12/23.  Kids are welcome to bring a sleeping bag & pillow, wear pj’s & slippers and enjoy a day of reading fun with one favorite stuffed animal!  Volunteers are welcome 🙂
