Anoleville is Born

When we started our day, little did we know that we would receive our class anoles!!  Check out the video, which describes our day a bit…
Here’s Mrs. Brooks, holding Vicky, our smaller male anole 🙂

Don't worry, she's being VERY gentle, even though Vicky is a wiggly little thing!!

This is Julian in the third grade in the USA. I watched the video. Those anoles are so cool. The video was so funny. My friends were giggling when the anoles ate the cricket. Where did you get it from?(who did you get it from?) Come look at our blog.

Hi this is Ella from NY.I watched your video about anoles and it was awesome! I didn’t think it was not going to eat the cricket, , but when it did, it gobbled up the cricket so fast. Have you named the anoles yet?

There one of my favorite animals! It was really cool when he ate the
cricket. Did you look at any other types of lizards?

  4. Stella

Hi, this is Stella. I really liked your video on anoles. it reminds me of when I caught a frog and I made a little home for him. But after a little while, I let the frog go. He also liked crickets.

How long have you had your anoles now? How have they changed since you’ve gotten them? Where did you get your anoles? What are your impressions of the anoles now?
Thank you for sharing that video with us.

Wow!! Hello there to Diya, Julian, Ella, Spin, Spencer, Stella, Tori, Ms. Simonsen and Class 3.2!!!

Thank you for leaving so many kind comments about our video and our anoles.

Every year, as part of our 3rd grade curriculum, we are allowed to have anoles in our classroom for about a month. Our two lizardy friends arrived on Tuesday this past week, and we will be keeping them until we head out on our April vacation. Each classroom has two anoles in their room, where we are able to observe them and learn about food chains and webs.

We aren’t sure exactly how old they are – but we know they are relatively young. They average 5-8 inches long as adults, and ours are about 4-5 inches right now. They live for about 3 years if treated properly.

We do know that both of our anoles (Vicky and Rango) are males. We’ve seen them arguing with each other in the tank by bobbing their heads up and down and showing their bright red dewlap (it’s like a red fan under their chin). For the most part, though, they seem to get along.

Each year, our anoles arrive from an educational company that sells science supplies. They come in the mail packaged with 8 anoles in one take-out container. Mrs. Brooks has to then go from classroom to classroom, and carefully take them out of the container to put in their terrariums. Thank goodness Mrs. Brooks loves holding them! At the end of our unit, the folks at PetCo and PetSmart are kind enough to take them in. Some of our students will go and buy the anoles at the store at the end of our unit, provided they can care for them properly long-term.

The students in 204 LOVE observing the anoles all day long. Sometimes Mrs. Brooks will aim the doc cam at the terrarium so we can all see on the SMARTBoard. It’s hard for 23 students to see, all crowded around the terrarium!

We appreciate your stopping by the blog, watching our video, and leaving such nice comments and great questions! Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!!

    Dream Big,
Mrs. Brooks & Her Anole Loving 3rd Graders!
