Are Geometry & Art Connected?

To wrap up our geometry unit – we enjoyed some extension activities.  In the morning, students spent time watching Jeff Panther’s video entitled Patterns.  While watching, they jotted down notes about topics having to do with geometry and art.  When the video ended, they wrote a letter to Mr. Panther to tell him about the connections they made to what they have been learning.  They were very focused – watch here:

Later that morning, Mrs. Brooks dug out her favorite quilt.  The students have come to know my grandmother, Louise, through the quilts hanging in the classroom.  This particular quilt is a sampler, and was created for me back in 1985.  My grandmother allowed me to choose the patterns, the fabrics and the layout, and then she stitched then entire quilt by hand.  Students were given a map to figure out which block was which, and then they had to choose a favorite. They drew their favorite block (NOT EASY!!!) and then labeled it with as many geometric vocabulary terms as possible. Miss Sally (my mom) was there to help out as well…

      Hi Rubes!

I have not read it – you’ll have to tell me more!!! A banana muffin sounds good right about now.

Did you see the new quilt page with the activities???
      Love,
      Mrs. Brooks
