Did you finish your writing? Did you finish your reading? Did you finish your Math? In our class, we have an entire list of activities that students can choose from when they finish their work in any particular subject. One choice worth mentioning today is the one a student of mine chose recently.
If you are in Room 309, you can tell family members at home which student decided to use her extra time to write to Ann M. Martin, who is the author of the Babysitter’s Club books, as well as one of my favorites – A Dog’s Life. This particular student took her time to write a long, detailed letter with many great questions, neat writing and some great connections.
Today? In the mail? We received a response from the author herself! I was so excited to share it with everyone, as there were two full pages of writing on the response letter. Ann M. Martin also sent along a bookmark which I of course gave to my friend who wrote the original letter.
Exciting, huh? I hope some other students have learned that their time “after finishing” can be even more rewarding and full-of-learning than their lessons – because they can take charge of what interests them!!! SO exciting!!!

I’m sad we finished the Dewey book but now we can read a new book! I found another short book about Dewey!!! It’s called Dewey’s Chrismas at the Library. If you want me to bring it in I can just write me back. I’m looking forward to seeing you on the 28th.
