Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!!
On March 2, students around the country celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss with “Read Across America Day!”
Mrs. Brooks’ class chose to celebrate by reading the wonderful story Horton Hears a Who.
In Arts Alive, we talked about the artistic style of Dr. Seuss. The students are so observant and through looking at various books by Dr. Seuss were able to talk about his characters and his scenery. Characters are typically animal-like, but with some human-like characteristics. He used bright colors, but usually only a few colors at a time. His characters usually have round bellies and hair or fur—sometimes they wear crazy hats or bowties! His buildings have few, if any, straight lines. They usually have many stories, stairways, ramps and platforms.
Armed with all of that information, students set out to create a Seuss-like world. A group of students created a Seuss-style building. Several students worked on creating Seuss-like characters. Another group designed some bridges and a fence and a final group prepared the beautiful background for this amazing world. The centerpiece of this world was made of replicas of the clovers that students carried around with them all day—to remind us all that:
“A person’s a person, no matter how small.”
